1990s Fashion at a glance

1990s Fashion at a glance

The worldwide economic recession at the beginning of the 90s resulted in the adoption of minimalism by designers, rejecting the excess of the 1990s, and a quest for authenticity. They started looking at the street to find inspiration in sub-cultures, like the grunge one, a merger of hippy and punk popularized by bands like Nirvana.

90s silhouettes:

  • baggy trousers and floral prints embraced by teens
  • slip dresses, sheer fabrics and a palette of black, grey and white for minimalist looks
  • choker necklace, leather and velvet for a grunge look
  • denim: mom jeans, denim jacket, low-waisted skirts and pants paired with either a crop tops or a turtleneck tops.

90s designers:

  • John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Gucci, Versace, Prada...
  • Calvin Klein also characterized the decade with his minimalism and controversial commercials for underwear.

90s icons: 1990s was the decade of “top models” elevated to the status of stars, such as Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell.
