1980s Fashion at a glance

The economic and political stability allowed diverse styles and trends to flourish in the 1980s: rock, punk, functional, sporty, office wear. Maximalism, oversize, bold colors, statement patterns, and large-shoulder sums up the 1980s, with a silhouette shaped like a V.
This image-obsessed and bling era enabled designers to become the new stars of the decade and fashion shows the new entertainment.

80s silhouettes:

  • The rock style with leather, denim. 
  • The functional style with sporty with sweaters, bold colours, leggings and bodysuits in funky materials, training jackets with matching pants
  • Office wear with the “power suit”, big pads, oversized blazers and tight pencil skirts. 
  • Very tight dresses introduced by Azzedine Alaïa

80s designers:

  • Azzedine Alaïa, Jean Paul Gaultier and Martin Margiela all defined the 1980s with their own visions. 
  • A new wave of designers emerged: Rei Kawakubo pour Comme des Garçons, Yohji Yamamoto, Vivienne Westwood, John Galliano, Dries von Noten, Marc Jacobs...
